Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic | Occupying the unceded land of the Taino peoples.

Artist Statement

Drawn by the ordinary and the unseen, I extrapolate from my daily life and surroundings - and overlap with archival research. My practice questions the construction of history - through the the study of society and its behavior and its connection to clothing, personal items, gestures and movements.

I am strongly marked by my upbringing in the Dominican Republic - living among it’s natural resources, culture and social reality, provoked a feeling of protection towards what I consider the most precious of the country- it’s people. My work gives visibility to marginalized stories by making a visceral connection through a tactile sensibility.

A self-portrait of the artist, with an image of a painting overlaid across the photo of her face.

| Image Description: Layered in front of a lemon-yellow background with an image of a chain link fence, is a head shot of Karla DiPuglia, a Dominican woman with dark brown chin-length hair wearing glasses. Obscuring most of her face is a rectangular image of a market, where a large green truck is behind a Black woman wearing a salmon pink dress and balancing a load of goods on her head while holding a basket on her hip. |
